Hello everyone! Lots happened yesterday with a pair of government Bills being introduced as well as a pair of older Bills being discussed
New Bills
We have a pair of related Bills that came up, the first of which is C-30 – Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 1 (Targeted Tax Relief). This Bill would increase the GST/HST rebate for 2022-2023, giving everyone about 50% more for the tax year than they would normally get.
The second half is C-31 – Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 2 (Targeted Support for Households). This Bill does two main things: First it creates a temporary dental care benefit to help parents of children under 12. The benefit is worth up to $650/tax year and is for families with an adjusted income less than $90k. The second thing C-31 does is provide a one-time benefit of $500 to low-income renters, families with an income of up to $35k or single renters up to $20k.
Old Bills
Bill C-22 – Canada Disability Benefit Act returns for its second reading. C-22 creates a federal disability benefit. It’s a little sparse on details right now, all the regulations and payments are to be determined after it passes, but it looks like it’s intended to make up for any shortfalls in provincial benefits.
Finally Bill C-242 – Reuniting Families Act has come up for its third reading. This Bill aims to make it easier for foreign parents/grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit the country by allowing them to qualify for entry with health insurance purchased from outside of Canada, as well as extending the maximum length of stay to 5 years.
And that’s all for the day! I’ll see you all tomorrow with the next update!
