This Bill amends the Canada Labour Code, Official Languages Act, Canada Business Corporations Act, and Citizenship Act to better line up with Quebec’s Charter of the French Language.

Canada Labour Code

The Canada Labour Code is amended to apply the Quebec Charter of the French Language to any federal work, undertaking or businesses operating in Quebec.

Official Languages Act

A few changes are made here, first up the preamble is changed to acknowledge that French is the official language of Quebec as well as the common language.

C-238 would prevent the federal government from obstructing the application of the Charter of the French Language within Quebec, and calls out that the Charter is covered under Quebec’s jurisdiction.

Canada Business Corporations Act

Small change is made here that requires the name of any corporation operating in Quebec meet the requirements of the Charter of the French Language.

Citizenship Act

Last change C-238 makes is requiring anyone applying for citizenship in Quebec to have an adequate knowledge of French, instead of any of Canada’s official languages.
