Bill S-219 – National Ribbon Skirt Day Act – makes January 4th National Ribbon Skirt Day.

There isn’t much to say about what the Bill does, so here’s the reasoning behind it. It’s based on the UN’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (which Canada signed) and the inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Both of these call for better recognition of Indigenous culture.

The reason the ribbon skirt was chosen is that it’s a symbol of womanhood and a connection to Mother Earth, and to recognize the role Indigenous women play in their communities.
