Bill Updates

C-288 – An Act to amend the Telecommunications Act (transparent and accurate broadband services information) – went up for its third reading and passed with everyone voting in favour. It will now move over to the Senate.

The Senate responded to the changes the House wants to make to their amendments. They have chosen to pass C-11 with the adjustments requested by the House. They also wanted to let the House know that they’ve taken note of the government’s public assurance that C-11 won’t apply to user-generated content and that they’ll be issuing policy direction to the CRTC that supports this.

C-11 was then given Royal Assent.

S-214 – The International Mother Language Day Act, C-228 – The Pension Protection Act, and C-233 – The Criminal Code and violence against intimate partners were also granted Royal Assent.

Motions

No sign of who put this one out there, but there was a Motion passed with unanimous consent that requires the CRTC to immediately take action to ensure that everyone answering 911 calls be able to speak French.  Just something worth mentioning.

Closing Fun

And that’s all for the week! There was a lot of debate regarding the budget bill, mostly around a Conservative motion to just scrap the whole thing, so it was a fairly uneventful week beyond that.

As a parting gift this week, I leave you with this wonderful quote I found!

Then we were left with nothing, because an election was called. Only the government knows why it was called. It is a total mystery, like the Caramilk secret.
