C-347 – An Act to amend the Constitution Act, 1867 (oath of office) – adds a new oath MPs can take when they first take their seat in the House.

Currently when an MP first takes their seat in the House they are expected to recite the Oath of Allegiance. The Oath of Allegiance is “I [name] do swear, that I will be faithful and bear true Allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Victoria.” Note that you change the Monarch’s name as appropriate, Queen Victoria is just the name actually written in the Constitution Act.

C-347 creates a new Oath, the Oath of Office, and gives MPs the option to recite that, the Oath of Allegiance, or both. The Oath of Office reads “I, [name], do swear that I will carry out my duties in the best interest of Canada while upholding its Constitution.”

Progress

C-347 is currently waiting to be added to the Order of Precedence.
