C-345 -An Act to protect firefighters, paramedics and other first responders – increases punishments for people who assault first responders.

C-345 makes changes to the Criminal Code to pretty much treat assaults against a first responder the same way it treats assaults against a police officer.
There’s two main effects to this. First, murdering a first responder who’s on duty immediately becomes a charge of first degree murder. Second, assaulting a first responder becomes its own offence separate of assault.
Finally C-345 increases the maximum prison sentence for assaulting a first responder from 14 years to 20 years.
