C-299 – An Act to amend the Criminal Code (life imprisonment) – increases the maximum sentence for a number of crimes to life in prison.
There’s a bit of a list here, the crimes affected by C-299 are:
- Sexual assault
- Incest
- Possession, distribution, creation, etc of child porn
- Accessing child porn
- Permitting sex with a minor on a property you own
- Making porn accessible to a minor (including selling or giving it to a minor)
- Human trafficking (including benefiting from it)
It’s worth noting that as far as sexual assault goes there’s currently different levels of punishment for it. Sexual assault has a maximum of 10 years in prison, while sexual assault with a minor or where a weapon is involved has a maximum of 14. C-299 has the maximum for all forms of sex assault as life in prison.
