This post is about a previous Session of Parliament. Any legislation here that did not receive Royal Assent has been terminated. |
C-378 – An Act amending the Canada Labour Code (complaints by former employees) – increases the amount of time former federal employees can file complaints against their employers.
First, note that this only applies to federally-regulated workplaces. This bill increases the amount of time former employees of these workplaces can file a complaint of workplace harassment or violence from three months to two years after leaving their job.
Why does C-378 matter?
Dominique doesn’t think the three month restriction gives former employees enough time to file complaints. Someone who leaves a job because of harassment might not be willing to file a complaint against their harasser right away, and this gives them more time to decide to do so.
Progress
C-378 went up for its Second Reading vote and passed with everyone voting in support. It will now be reviewed by the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (HUMA).
