This post is about a previous Session of Parliament. Any legislation here that did not receive Royal Assent has been terminated. |
C-376 – An Act to amend the Criminal Code (orders prohibiting the possession of weapons) – makes it so anyone convicted of a violent crime is barred from possessing a firearm.
The specific cases here is when someone is convicted of committing or threatening violence against someone. Right now if the crime has a maximum prison sentence of ten years or more the person convicted is automatically banned from having a firearm. C-376 removes the ten year requirement and just automatically bans anyone convicted of these crimes from having a firearm.
Why does C-376 matter?
Eric doesn’t have much to say on this one, only that it will help reduce violent crime in Canada.
Progress
C-376 is currently waiting for its Second Reading vote. If this is something you care about, contact your MP and let them know!
