C-411 – An Act to amend the Criminal Code (arson — wildfires and places of worship) – creates a new criminal offence for arson that results in a wildfire or the destruction of a place of worship.

Punishment

Someone who’s guilty of intentionally starting a wildfire can be imprisoned for up to 14 years or fined up to $100,000 on the first offence. Each offence after that can result in life in prison or a fine up to $250,000.

Someone who tries to burn down a place of worship will be put in prison for at least 5 years, up to 14 years. Each additional offence carries a prison time between 7 years and life. There are no fines for this one, just jail.

Finally if you commit arson and it results in a wildfire or damage to a place of worship that will be considered an aggravating factor and result in harsher punishment for the arson.

Progress of C-411

C-411 is currently outside of the Order of Precedence.
