Bill S-206 would allow jurors to share information regarding the proceedings of the jury while not in the courtroom (ie deliberations) with a professional providing medical or psychiatric treatment as long as the treatment is needed for health issues that were caused by the jury duty.
C-29 would create the Council for Reconciliation. This council is an independent, non-political organization which will have at least two-thirds of its members from Indigenous backgrounds. Its purpose will be to report on the progress towards reconciliation between Canadian governments and Indigenous groups, and to make recommendations on what could be done to advance reconciliation.
Hello everyone! Lots happened yesterday with a pair of government Bills being introduced as well as a pair of older Bills being discussed New Bills We have a pair of related Bills that came up, the first of which is C-30 – Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 1 (Targeted Tax Relief). This Bill would increase the GST/HST rebate for 2022-2023, giving everyone about 50% more for the tax year than they would normally get. The second half is C-31 – Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 2 (Targeted Support for Households). This Bill does two main things: First it...
C-31 does three things.
First, it establishes the Dental Benefit Act which will provide financial support for parents for dental services received by their children under the age of 12, between October 2022 and June 2024.
Second, it creates the Rental Housing Benefit Act which will provide a one-time payment to eligible people who paid rent in 2022.
Third, it makes changes to the Income Tax Act, Excise Tax Act, and Excise Act related to the previous two points.
C-30 is another bill that changes the Income Tax Act! As usual there’s a ton of math in here that’s a bit beyond me, but the general goal is to double the GST/HST credit for 6 months, giving everyone about 50% more than what they would normally receive for the 2022-2023 benefit year.
Original Bill here Bill C-242 does a few things relating to extended temporary resident visas used to visit children or grandchildren that are Canadian citizens or permanent residents. First, if someone applying for a TRV is staying for an extended period of time it will allow them to use a health insurance policy purchased from an insurance company outside of Canada to meet the requirement that they have private health insurance. Second, it sets the length of an extended stay to 5 years. (As far as I can see TRVs usually only allow for a visit of 6 months) Finally...
Original Bill here Bill C-22 would create the Canada Disability Benefit. There isn’t a lot of details yet, the regulations involving this benefit are to be created at a future date by an Order in Council. It does call out “work disincentives such as the loss of income and other benefits as a result of becoming employed” as being a problem for people with disabilities, so it probably won’t be something subject to clawbacks from having employment income. It also explicitly states that these payments aren’t subject to any law regarding bankruptcy, cannot be given as security, cannot be retained...
Good morning everyone! The House of Commons returned yesterday, and the business of the day was devoted to honouring the Queen. A motion was passed with unanimous consent right away to devote the 15th and 16th to honouring the Queen and the new King.
