Commons Updates – Feb. 6 to Feb. 10

So last week we had some Business of Supply days. Business of Supply is the procedure where the House decides to allocate the funds needed for the various needs of the government. On these days Opposition Motions can be proposed, and they take priority over any government motions or business. The idea is that it gives the Opposition the ability to make a case against the government spending, though these Motions can be about pretty much anything they want.

Commons Updates – Jan 30 to Feb 3

Hello everyone! Here’s what’s changed over the last week! Motions Sameer Zuberi proposed M-62, which would aims to help Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims fleeing China. It would see an additional 10,000 refugees from these groups brought into the country between 2024 and 2026, and gives 100 sitting days to come up with a plan on how to do this. Jenny Kwan (NDP, BC, Vancouver East) proposed an amendment that would include a clause to make sure these refugees are in addition to our normal refugee stream, and increase the time to come up with a plan to 120 days....

House of Commons – September 22, 2022

Quick and short summary today. Debate continued on Bill C-30 – Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 1 (Targeted Tax Relief) and Bill C-31 – Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 2 (Targeted Support for Households) As a quick reminder, C-30 would increase the GST/HST rebates people get for the 2022-2023 tax year. C-31 would create a temporary benefit to cover dental expenses for children in low-income families, and provide a one-time benefit to low-income individuals to help with rent.

Hello everyone! We saw some action on Bill C-29 as well as S-206. C-29 – National Council for Reconciliation Act has started the second reading process. This Bill would create a non-political group to monitor progress on reconciliation with the Indigenous population, and look into suggestions on how to move the process along. S-206 – An Act to amend the Criminal Code (disclosure of information by jurors) completed its third reading debates, and will go up for its final vote on September 28th. Hello everyone! Lots happened yesterday with a pair of government Bills being introduced as well as a pair of older Bills being discussed New Bills We have a pair of related Bills that came up, the first of which is C-30 – Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 1 (Targeted Tax Relief). This Bill would increase the GST/HST rebate for 2022-2023, giving everyone about 50% more for the tax year than they would normally get. Good morning everyone! The House of Commons returned yesterday, and the business of the day was devoted to honouring the Queen. A motion was passed with unanimous consent right away to devote the 15th and 16th to honouring the Queen and the new King.
