C-385 – An Act to amend the Motor Vehicle Transport Act – creates an exemption to the daily driving limit for truckers.

The new exemption applies to truckers transporting livestock.  Any time spent within 240km of the truck’s origin or destination won’t count towards the maximum number of hours a trucker can be driving in a day.  Note that this only applies to federally regulated transports, so only anything being transported between provinces.

The goal here is to give companies more flexibility to deal with emergencies or delays when transporting livestock.  Unexpected delays could cause a company to need to choose between risking the health of livestock or breaking regulations on how long a trucker is allowed to drive before going off-duty.  Finding ways to do this was one of the recommendations in the Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food’s 16th Report.
