C-421 – the National Food Cooperative Strategy Act – wants to fight high grocery prices by creating a strategy to support small and medium-sized grocery businesses.
The general idea here is that Alistair wants to introduce more competition to the handful of large companies that control our food supply by encouraging the creation of more small, locally-owned businesses.
C-421 leaves things pretty open as far as the contents of the strategy goes. The only requirement Alistair has is that it contain measures to help with the creation of food cooperatives to help smaller grocery stores be more competitive. The Minister of Industry will be responsible for creating this strategy with consultations with the usual groups. (Provincial representatives, Indigenous communities, and relevant stakeholders.) They’ll have 18 months to create the strategy and present it to the House.
Progress of C-421
C-421 is currently outside of the Order of Precedence.
