C-224 – An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (natural health products) – declares that natural health products are not therapeutic and as such won’t be subject to the same regulations as other drugs.
Blaine tried to pass this one last session (C-368) but it didn’t get through before the election so here it is again. Some of the wording has changed but the overall effect is the same, any natural health product that doesn’t contain nicotine is not considered therapeutic and as such won’t be regulated the same way drugs are.
Progress of C-224
C-224 is currently waiting for its Second Reading vote. Worth noting that the Liberals were the only ones opposed to it last time, though the main reason given for support from the other parties was that classifying natural health products as drugs was done as part of the 2023 budget instead of being proposed as its own legislation. We’ll see if anyone’s changed their minds since then.
