C-226 – The National Framework for Food Price Transparency Act – creates a framework for unit pricing of groceries and transparency for price increases.

This was previously proposed as C-406, but it didn’t get on the Order of Precedence before the election so it never advanced. Worth noting it was previously an NDP Bill, and now it’s been taken up by a Liberal MP instead.

Nothing has changed since the last time this was proposed. The Minister of Industry will have 18 months to create a framework that includes:

  • Standards for unit pricing of food and household goods
  • Standards on transparency around price changes
  • Measures to educate the public on what unit pricing is and how it works (Things like showing the price per 100g of meat or cereal, making it easier to compare prices)

This framework will be reviewed every five years.
