C-230 – An Act to amend the Financial Administration Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts (debt forgiveness registry) – creates a registry of debt owed to the government and any actions taken on it.
This registry will need to be public and searchable, and will be maintained by the President of the Treasury Board. It will need to include any situations where:
- A debt of $1 million or more is owed to the government
- The debt was created under an Act of Parliament
- The debt has been partially or completely forgiven, waived, or written off
The registry will need to include:
- The name of the company/trust/etc that owes the debt
- The amount that was waived or forgiven
- When the forgiveness happened
- The Act that created the debt
- Any other information the President of the Treasury Board thinks is needed
Progress of C-230
C-230 passed its Second Reading without a vote and is currently being reviewed by the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.
