Happy Wednesday everyone!
The House is back in session and we’re back with updates on what’s been happening! Of course this is just the first week, so there isn’t a lot to cover. We’ve just got one thing that’s been happening:
Throne Speech
Government Response – Corey Hogan (Liberal, Alberta, Calgary Confederation)
So as I’m sure we’re all aware the King came by to deliver the Throne Speech. As you’d expect the government wants to send a message back to the King to thank him for stopping by and addressing us. Corey wants the message to read:
TO THE KING’S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY:
MOST GRACIOUS SOVEREIGN:
We, Your Majesty’s most loyal and dutiful subjects, the House of Commons of Canada, in Parliament assembled, beg leave to offer our humble thanks to Your Majesty for the gracious Speech which Your Majesty has addressed to both Houses of Parliament;
Lot of fancy words in there but it’s just a standard “Thank you for coming”.
Amendment – Andrew Scheer (Conservative, Saskatchewan, Regina—Qu’Appelle)
And of course the politicking starts immediately. Andrew wants to add to the end of the response:
and we urge Your Majesty’s advisors to include a firm commitment to present to Parliament an economic update or budget this spring, before the House adjourns for the summer, that incorporates measures aimed at unleashing Canada’s economic potential, including full accountability of Canada’s finances;
So he wants the King to tell the Liberals to release a budget before the summer break.
Subamendment – Yves-François Blanchet (Bloc Québécois, Quebec, Beloeil—Chambly)
Yves-François wants to add a line to the end of Andrew’s amendment:
with respect for the areas of jurisdiction and the institutions of Quebec and the provinces
No surprises here, as you’d expect the Bloc wants to make sure any directions from the King respects provincial jurisdictions.
Yves-François’ subamendment then went up for a vote and passed with everyone voting in favour of it.
Closing Fun
And that’s all we’ve got for the first week! I’ll see you all next week when we’ve figured out what the response to the King will be and hopefully get some actual work started! See you then!
