Hello everyone! Sorry for the silence last week, I came down sick and didn’t have the energy (or focus) to read through anything legislative. Fortunately it was a short week last week, so we’ll just do a full-week summary!

New Bills

First up we saw the introduction of Bill 18 – Consent Awareness Week Act. This Bill would declare the week starting the third Monday in September Consent Awareness Week, with the main purpose being to draw attention to the increase of sexual violence on post-secondary campuses during the first few weeks of the new school year.

Bill 19 – Auditor General Amendment Act was introduced. This one would remove the ability for Crown organizations, ministries, and grant recipients to avoid handing information over to the Auditor General on the grounds of privacy, confidentiality, or other privileged reasons. If the Auditor General thinks the information is needed to do their job, it needs to be provided. No exceptions.

Bill 20 – Access to Sexual Assault Evidence Kits and Provision of Sexual Assault Education Act was introduced, and would require all nursing students be provided free access to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training. It would also require all hospitals have at least 10 sexual assault evidence kits available to be provided for free to any patients that need them.

Bill 21 – Fixing Long-Term Care Amendment Act (Till Death Do Us Part) was introduced, and would require LTC homes to provide accommodations for the spouses of anyone admitted so that the two would be able to continue living together.

Bill 22 – Poet Laureate of Ontario Amendment Act (French-language Poet Laureate of Ontario) was the last Bill introduced last week, and would see the title of Poet Laureate split into two, one for an English-language Poet Laureate and one for a French-language Poet Laureate.

Old Bills

Bill 3 – Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act came back for its third reading vote. This is the Bill that would give Mayors the ability to veto anything that goes against a Provincial Priority, as well as full control over budgets and a few other powers. The Bill passed with the PCs voting in favour and everyone else voting against.

Bill 9 – Safe and Healthy Communities Act (Addressing Gun Violence) went up for its second reading vote. This Bill would make it so trauma counselling for survivors of gun violence would be covered under the Health Insurance Act. It was defeated, the PCs voting against it and everyone else voting in favour.
