Bill 24 is focused on preventing patients from being charged “unfair fees” by designating it as professional misconduct or by revoking or suspending the licenses of independent health facilities.
Regulated Health Professions Act
Charging an unfair fee is added to the list of what’s considered professional misconduct. If a doctor is found guilty of this they are expected to reimburse the patient for the amount that was paid and their registration is suspended for 3 months.
The College’s Patient Relations Program will be updated to include measures for preventing and dealing with unfair fees being charged, as well as defining what counts as an “unfair fee”.
Independent Health Facilities Act
The Director will be allowed to suspend or revoke a licence if they believe an independent health facility is or will charge unfair fees to patients. The Director will also be able to amend a licence to remove any services that they believe will result in unfair fees to patients.
