S-222 – An Act to amend the Department of Public Works and Government Services Act (use of wood) was introduced by former Senator Diane Griffin. Diane was required by Senate retirement rules to retire last year before S-222 could complete its progress.

S-222 changes the Department of Public Works and Government Services Act with regards to the construction, maintenance, and repair of public works and properties. The Minister will be expected to consider any potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when making requirements for these projects, and can allow for the use of wood or other sustainable resources if they would help with these reductions.

Progress

S-222 has passed through the Senate unchanged, completed its Second Reading vote with everyone voting in favour. On Sept 27, 2023 it came back from its committee step unchanged and passed its Third Reading with everyone voting in favour! It’s now waiting to be granted Royal Assent.
