C-406 – The National Framework for Food Price Transparency Act – creates a framework for unit pricing of groceries and transparency for price increases.
This framework will be created by the Minister of Industry with assistance from provincial representatives responsible for consumer affairs. The framework will include:
- Standards for unit pricing of food and household goods
- Standards on transparency around price changes
- Measures to educate the public on what unit pricing is and how it works (For anyone not aware, unit pricing is like showing the price per 100g of cereal, making it easier to compare the price of different sizes of cereal boxes)
The Minister will have 18 months to create this framework, and it will be reviewed every five years.
Progress of C-406
C-406 is currently outside of the Order of Precedence.
