C-405 – An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Parliament of Canada Act – increases the punishment for perjury before the House and creates a new fine for people in contempt of Parliament.
First is the punishment for perjury. If you’ve committed perjury before the House or one of its committees there will now be a minimum sentence of 6 months in prison. (The maximum sentence for perjury anywhere is 14 years)
Second is the new fine for being in contempt of Parliament. This fine can be as high as $50,000 and applies even if the government prorogues or goes into an election.
Progress of C-405
C-405 is currently waiting for its Second Reading vote. If you have opinions on it, contact your MP and let them know!
