| This post is about a previous Session of Parliament. Any legislation here that did not receive Royal Assent has been terminated. |
C-269 – An Act to amend the Telecommunications Act (suicide prevention) – has the CRTC create a 3-digit phone number dedicated to suicide prevention.
Not much else to say here, it’s a simple Act. There’s nothing here on actually staffing or running the hotline, just designating a fixed number as the emergency hotline number. This would help standardize any suicide prevention hotlines across the country. Currently it looks like several provinces use 2-1-1, Quebec uses 8-1-1, and there’s a federal hotline listed at 9-8-8.
It’s worth noting that the CRTC went into consultations for the 9-8-8 hotline a few months after this Bill was introduced, and have obviously gone through with implementing it so there’s a good chance this Bill will be abandoned if it gets the chance to proceed.
Progress of C-269
C-269 is currently outside of the Order of Precedence.
