C-206 – the National Strategy on Brain Injuries Act – creates a national strategy for preventing and treating brain injuries.
Gord wants the Minister of Health to work with the provinces, Indigenous communities, and any other relevant stakeholders to create the Strategy. It should have measures to:
- Promote the implementation of measures to prevent or reduce the risk of brain injury
- Assist in identifying the training and education needs of medical professionals when it comes to preventing brain injuries and caring for people who have suffered them
- Promote research and improve data collection on the causes and treatment of brain injuries, as well as care for people suffering from them
- Promote information sharing on brain injury causes, prevention, and treatment
- Create national guidelines on diagnosing and treating brain injuries, including recommended standards of care
- Promote awareness and education to improve public understanding of living with brain injuries
- Foster collaboration with and providing funding support to brain injury associations at all levels to help create resources for people living with a brain injury and their families
- Encourage consultation with mental health professionals to provide community-based support systems for people living with brain injuries
- Identify challenges resulting from brain injury, such as addiction and mental health problems, and work with stakeholders to develop solutions for them
- Develop, publish, and maintain online resources with current facts, research, and best practices related to brain injuries
- Establish a task force including policy makers, community agencies, brain injury associations, and Indigenous groups to make recommendations on the Strategy
The Minister will have 18 months to create this Strategy and it will be reviewed 5 years after that.
