C-210 – An Act to amend the Constitution Act, 1867 (oath of office) – gives new Senators and MPs the option to recite an Oath of Office instead of the Oath of Allegiance.
We saw something similar to this last Session, though it was the Liberals sponsoring it then. Currently when an MP is elected or a Senator is appointed they have to recite the Oath of Allegiance, which reads:
I [name] do swear, That I will be faithful and bear true Allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Victoria.
Note that you replace Queen Victoria’s name with the name of the current Monarch.
Xavier wants to change the Constitution Act to allow people to recite an Oath of Office instead, which reads:
I, [name], do solemnly and sincerely promise and declare that I will truly and faithfully and to the best of my skill and knowledge execute the powers and trusts reposed in me as a member of the Senate [or House of Commons (as the case may be)] of Canada.
Note that all MPs and Senators will have the choice of which of these Oaths to be sworn in with, and can choose both if they want to.
Progress of C-210
C-210 is currently outside of the Order of Precedence.
