C-397 – An Act to amend the Excise Tax Act and the Department of Employment and Social Development Act – simplifies reporting a death to the government and makes funerals tax-exempt.

The first part of C-397 changes the Excise Tax Act to remove anything that would put GST on anything related to a funeral. This includes tombstones, coffins, funeral services, everything. No federal tax on funerals.

The second part changes the Department of Employment and Social Development Act to create a one-stop service to report a death to. You report a death to that one department and they’ll reach out to all other government departments that were providing a service to the deceased and inform them of the death. No need to track down every government department that was working with the deceased, the government will handle that for you.

Progress of C-397

C-397 is currently waiting for its Second Reading vote. If this is something you have opinions on, contact your MP and let them know!
